This island is part of Costa Verde attraction. Its biological
diversity is unique in Brazil. This beautiful island which
has 106 beaches, mountains and waterfales, stays an hour from
Angra dos Reis or Mangaratiba by ferry.
Ilha Grande had a population of native indians - Tamoios and
Tupinambás - who gave it name of Ipaum (Island / Ilha)
and Guaçu (Big / Grande).
One of most beautiful beaches is Lopes Mendes, in the South
of Ilha Grande.
During the 70s, Ilha Grande came to be a State Park as the
Biological Reserve of Praia do Sul and many interesting historical
constructions can be found there.
